FLY RIVER CUP INTO BUSINESS END WITH K20, 000 UP FOR GRAB
The inaugural Fly River rugby league cup tournament is currently underway on Daru Island with a total of eight teams vying to take home K20, 000 prize money.
The tournament was launched yesterday with two teams each from North Fly, Middle Fly, South Fly and Delta Fly all in for the tussle.
The event is baked by Western Provincial government under governor Taboi Awi Yoto, the district MPs and partners.
The tournament laced off yesterday with the winning prize set at K20, 000, second prize K10, 000 while a consolation prize of K5000 will be given to all participating teams.
Tournament Director, Chris Mel said the event is reviving the spirit of rugby league in the province which will impact the youths and most importantly ignite the dream of one day competing in the highest competition in PNG.
‘’This is a first of its kind in the province and we are determined to position ourselves and see where we can build from so one day we can have Western Province in the prestigious PNGNRLC,” Mel said.
“We have a total of eight teams travelling in to participate in this inaugural event, that is two teams per district and all the travel arrangements, playing uniforms, meals and accommodations here are fully funded by the Fly River Cup Tournament.’’
The province does not want to be spectators in the buildup and excitement rugby league is building on around PNG Chiefs as they keep the ball rolling to have their talents competing for a place in the Franchise to NRL in the near future.
The event was graced with the presence of Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League Development Officer, Tony Waliya, Hela Wigmen head coach, Ian Yaro, Junior PNG Orchids head coach Godfrey Luke and the representative of Port Moresby Rugby Football League to ensure the Tournament is officiated properly.
