GALE WINDS WARNING
The Papua New Guinea National Weather Service has confirmed that the Southern Region is currently experiencing Strong and Gale-force winds.
Gale wind refers to winds of 35 knots to about 40 to 50 knots.
“We do not normally experience these winds; however, this wet season we are having these winds on a higher frequency than the years preceding”, said Assistant Director, Benjamin Malai.
Currently the National Weather Service is issuing Gale wind warning and will maintain strong wind warnings throughout the country.
The winds the Southern Region is facing currently are indirectly an impact of an active trough.
“We are having an active trough referred to as an elongated line of low pressure in which raw gradient of temperature where you get sets of winds coming through those sets of troughs,” said Malai.
He said they have detected these troughs for a while now and because of that the southern region is facing strong winds.
Malai urged people to take the National Weather Service Warnings seriously, especially the Gale Wind Warning.
