Minister for Sports, Justin Tkatchenko, has expressed his utmost disgust at the Oceania Swimming Association and FINA for awarding Fiji hosting rights for the 2016 Oceania Swimming Championships.
Tkatchenko questioned why Fiji was granted a three week extension to seek government support to facilitate the tournament, when Papua New Guinea had the facilities and full support of the national government to host an event, of this scale.
“History has shown that countries that host Pacific Games traditionally host the next Oceania Tournament.
“The Government of PNG has invested multi-millions of Kina into arguably the best aquatic facility in the Pacific. The Aquatic Centre is truly state of the art, and has the most up to date FINA approved pool and equipment in the Pacific,” he added
Tkatchenko has written to the President of the Oceania Swimming Association and Vice President of FINA, Dennis Miller, regarding this matter.
