Teaching techniques a concern

By Patricia Keamo, EMTV Cadet Journalist – Port Moresby

During presentations of JICA volunteers in different provinces, a volunteer working in Manus Province spoke of his experience there.

Taku Imaizumi has been working as a teacher at Pombrut Primary School in Manus since February last year, 2018. He has been teaching mathematics among other subjects, one of the biggest challenges he faced was the slow level of understanding the students have. Imaizumi says he has about 70 students in his class and most of them have difficulty in understanding and interpreting basic concepts taught.

One main reason, according to this volunteer, is the performance of the teachers. Most teachers tend to write notes on the board for students to copy and this becomes boring for the students as they copy word for word without engaging in activities that can enhance their thinking capacity.

A representative from Papua New Guinea’s Education Department, Colette Dadavana, who also attended today’s presentation also commented on the performance of teachers at this school.

She says, the issue on the quality of teachers is a most talked-about issue and measures are being taken to address it.
