Supreme Court Finds Gulf Governor Not Guilty

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Gulf Governor, Havila Kavo, has been found not guilty by the Supreme Court on charges laid against him.

His decision was passed by a 3 judge bench that ruled a unanimous decision.

“It is a great relief for me, my family, Gulf Province and my supporters,” Kavo said.

His team of Lawyers from the Ketan Law Firm explained that Kavo’s conviction, passed by the National Court two months ago, was unlawful.

“It is a rule of law that every conviction must be under rule of law, and the Supreme Court has squashed the sentence exercising its powers under section 23 of the Supreme Court to overrule the National Court’s decision to a verdict of not guilty,” Kavo’s Principal Lawyer, Simon Ketan said.

Kavo was alleged of misusing public funds in 2012 and since then has been to court.

Two months ago, he was convicted to a three year sentence in jail but was out on bail.

His appeal to the Supreme Court has seen him being cleared of all charges after lack of evidence and his unlawful conviction.
