Following a few short months of training, the West Papua Warriors took on the Philippines Admirals in their first international fixture over the weekend in Sydney, Australia.
Warriors Captain, Tala Kami, described the fixture as exciting and was delighted with the 54-8 victory against the Filipino side.
The winning West Papua Warriors team that played against the Admirals consisted of 11 PNG-based players including the likes of Port Moresby Vipers members Lawrence Kuso, Sam Koim Jnr, Ham Tina, Karo Kauna and team captain, Tala Kami. The team recruited a total of six players based in Brisbane and Sydney to assist them with their victory.
Despite the players coming from different locations, they all had one thing in common; a passion for the West Papuan cause. This drive supported them to win their first international fixture.
Warriors Captain Kami was delighted at the team’s effort and said younger players such as Brendan Gotuno, who was the top try scorer, and Tomasi Kami who scored the opening try of the match showcased some outstanding performances.
The Warriors are back in Port Moresby after the win over the Filipino side and are focused on more upcoming tournaments to be announced soon.
