PNGDF Pipes and Drum Band Plans to Expand

By Merilyn Diau-Katam – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Pipes and Drum Band is a unique organisation at the PNG Defence Force.

They provide music for ceremonial events but most importantly during times of war, they keep the morale going for the soldiers.

This year saw a new experience for the PNGDF military band.

Two officers from the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming stepped in to assist the Pacific Islands Pipes and Drums Band.

The two officers have been conducting music training for two weeks at the 1st Royal Pacific Island Regiment following the donations of new band equipment donated from the United Kingdom.

For the 1RPIR, this was a first to have music coordinators with military background. The arrangement was part of the Defence Corporations.

Sergeant Andy Reid, from the Highlands 4th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland and Corporal Gareth McKee, who have never travelled to the country before, said this was also a new experience for them.

The new band training will fall in line with expansion plans in preparations for the upcoming 2018 APEC Summit.
