The proportion of men infected with HIV and the extent of the HIV epidemic in PNG’s rural areas is still unknown.
Estimates from 2010 show 0.8 per cent of the adult population were infected with HIV.
However this estimate was based on HIV testing conducted among pregnant women attending antenatal care in urban areas, where as 90 per cent of people live in rural areas.
Beginning January 2013 the National Aids Council Secretariat, the National Department of Health and other partner agencies will conduct a survey to estimate the proportion of adults living with HIV.
