Papa Youths Celebrated New Year Peacefully

By Eric Haurupma – (UPNG Journalism Student) EM TV, Port Moresby

Youths from Papa Village along the Motuan Coastline in the Central Province, have had a peaceful celebration during the New Year period.

Many of these youths have taken part in mini games organized by village elders rather than involving themselves in alcohol related activities.

Around 8am in the morning, youths from the area gathered in numbers at the village arena, to prepare themselves for these mini games.

These games include breaking balloons to win cash and other prizes. The most fascinating event was the translation of the Hiri Motu dialect by the Koitabuan women.

This version includes the Motuan women asking questions in Hiri-Motu to Koitabuans, and they would try to interpret it in Tok Pisin. The winning side was rewarded for the correct interpretation.

This gathering usually brings together community members from within Central, NCD and village locals living abroad.

Joy and laughter welcomed guests in the area. This is typically a Motu-Koitabuan tradition when it comes to festive celebrations.

Youths who caused trouble are apprehended and handed over to the police. Meanwhile, there were no reports of alcohol related problems in the area.
