Ombudsman Commissioner John Nero died in the early hours of Saturday morning. The late Ombudsman Nero died while on holidays in his home village of Kasena, in the Eastern Highlands Province.
The Ombudsman Commission of PNG has described his death as a great loss to the Commission.
At the time of his death, the late John Nero was serving his second term in office as Ombudsman. Ombudsman Nero was described as a straight shooter and a firm decision maker.
Chief Ombudsman Commissioner Rigo Lua in a statement said the Commission Staff will greatly miss his style of leadership.
Ombudsman Nero held a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from the University of PNG and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Queensland University.
As a qualified Accountant, Mr Nero brought great wealth of specialist and skills in inspections, auditing and investigations of the government expenditure and accounting system.
Ombudsman Nero joined the Finance & Planning Department as a Finance Inspector for four and a half years before joining the Commission as a Senior Investigator in 1991. He was later promoted to Deputy Director Leadership in 2002 then appointed as Ombudsman in 2005.
The body of the late Ombudsman is currently in Goroka and funeral arrangements will be published in the media soon.
