Goroka locals want cooperation to rebuild market

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Eastern Highlands Governor Julie Soso last week called on Goroka MP Bire Kimisopa to put aside their differences and work together in rebuilding the Goroka Town market.

In support of this, community leader and market supervisor Veho Mohokule said the people are waiting to respond immediately to help rebuild the market. Mohokule said they want the two politicians to cooperate and work together.

The current state of the market is in need of change. Space is limited, with market vendors selling their produce in what used to be the market’s car park. Rain is another problem; it creates large pools of water in the market, leaving goods vulnerable to the mud.

Proper disposal of rubbish is another problem in the market, with no proper waste and sanitation facilities available.

Moreover, last week Governor Soso assured the people of Eastern Highlands that the market will be rebuilt.

“We want to develop it for the women; [preferably] a two-storey, big market,” she said.
