Half a million Kina has been allocated for the renovation of the NBC Morobe Building in Lae, according to Minister responsible for Communications, Sam Basil.
“Basically, we’re not talking about a new building, but we will be replacing the roof, and work on the ceiling and replace all the electronics and wirings systems.” Mr. Basil said.
The building housing NBC’s provincial radio station in Lae’s top town was used for forty-seven years. It was condemned in October, last year, after being deemed unsafe for staff.
Staff have since vacated the building, and are operating from a makeshift office. Whilst, funds have been allocated, the question is, how soon can the work be done.
“They are now looking at talking to various contractors, local contractors in Lae to start formulating quotes and presenting back to NBC board,” Mr. Basil said.
Mr. Sam Basil said apart from the renovations planned for NBC Morobe, there are also plans to fund radio New Ireland, and a new NBC office in Port Moresby.
