Firearms Training for Officers Concludes

A week-long Firearms Training program concluded on Friday, with a target practice session, and presentation of certificates.

25 police officers stationed at the Kwikila, in the Rigo District of Central province, sat through the program.

The training was aimed at increasing the officers knowledge on firearms, and a measure to address its illegal use.

The training was initiated this year as a result of a directive issued by Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, to minimise the loss of innocent lives because of illegal use of firearms.

It is the fourth such program to be conducted in 2016 through the Police Training College.

The other three were conducted in NCD, Gulf and Manus provinces.

Firearms training remains an important part of Police Training, however, Police Training College Commandant, Perou N’Dranou, explained that firearms can be a dangerous tool when force is used.

The commandant said it is legal for police to use force, but there are regulations on the use of force.

He said the college is aiming to conduct the training annually so officers are well informed on when to and when not to use a firearm.

Of the 25, only one was a female officer.
