There are calls for the National Government to divert some of the funds that was earmarked for the 40th Independence celebrations to assist disaster affected areas.
The calls were made this week by Fr Victor Roach from the Catholic Church and Opposition Leader, Don Polye.
The Opposition Leader’s comments come after the Catholic Bishops Conference of PNG and Solomon Islands, call, for the state to respect and protect human rights and address its needs.
In a media statement, the Opposition Leader said funds earmarked for the Independence Celebration should be diverted for relief assistance.
K25 million, Mr Polye said, is a large sum of money and can save many lives in to areas affected by the dry spell.
Polye reiterated his call for the National Government to defer this year’s Independence celebrations and divert funds into assisting drought victims.
