The high transport fees in Maritime Provinces will be subsidized by the Transport Department. This follows unprofitable income recorded by shipping companies.
The news was announced by the newly appointment Transport Minister, Malakai Tabar, during the Hand Over Take Over Ceremony from former Transport Minister, Ano Pala in Port Moresby today.
Malakia Tabar was appointment last Friday to lead the department while former Transport Minister, Ano pala, will be heading the Justice and Attorney as minister responsible.
The former minister Ano Pala was able to produce the National Transport Strategy which was launched last year.
It’s a 20 years strategy with a rolling five years investment plan that will address the PNG Transport system.
The new minister welcomed the challenge and said, though his priority is to administer his district, he will spend the first few weeks to familiarize himself with the department.
It is the aim of Gazelle MP to not repeat the Rabaul Queen incident and look at ways to minimize the number of lives lost at sea.
The First Assistant Secretary of Maritime Transport Division, Charles Siniu said, the Transport Department will be tasking companies like Ela Motors to supply life jackets, and safety equipment when selling boats to customers.
