More communities in Lae have come forward, supporting the call for authorities to address the widespread abuse of alcohol.
Lae’s Papuan Compound came forward today, saying alcohol is the cause of many social issues.
Last week, EM TV News spoke to members of four communities in Lae on this same subject.
A former Primary School Teacher and resident of Papuan Compound for over thirty years said they’ve tried their best to help get the youths of this compound off from consuming alcohol, but little to nothing has been achieved.
Ignesia Bunan said they need government support.
According to the residents, underage children are now consuming alcohol and parents can’t do much, due to peer influence.
So far, five communities in Lae with a population of over seven thousand have raised concerns over the effects of alcohol abuse, saying the government should intervene and review all existing laws governing the production, sale and consumption of alcohol beverages.
The police also confirmed that they receive complaints of alcohol related cases daily, however, it is difficult responding to all cases at the same time due to lack of manpower and resources.
