Business PNG – Episode 19, 2014

In this episode:

Is PNG's Tuna Industry Being Exploited? PNG's tuna industry has been, as claimed by some, “underrated”.

Total tuna exports is valued at around K200 million however, the National Fisheries Authority believes that the potential market value of PNG's tuna industry is valued at around K 1billion depending on the commodity price.

PNG's tuna is exported in the form of fresh chilled, canned, fish meal and frozen tuna reaching as far as the USA, Germany and Great Britain as well as to neighboring countries such as Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan and some MSG member countries.

It is estimated that about 18% of the world's tuna catch is from PNG's 2.5million square kilometer Exclusive Economic Zone – the largest EEZ in the Pacific region.

Despite its magnitude and its potential, some say that PNG's tuna industry to this day, is still being exploited.
