Bougainville Tourism Target

by Fabian Hakalits – EM TV, Port Moresby

Tourists from the United States of America have proven wrong the global perception of Papua New Guinea, as a highly dangerous country.

Although still a developing country, tourists said PNG has much more to offer in terms of economic resources, with a high potential in the tourism industry.

These remarks were made during their visit to Pororan Island, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, on board the cruise ship Oceanic Discoverer.

Upon their arrival, the tourists were treated the Melanesian way and were entertained with many traditional singsings.

Delighted by the island’s natural and scenic beauty, tourists say Bougainville is a tourism destination with high potential, and is another target tourism spot for international tourists.

Dave Larsson and Crickette Brownglad were fascinated by the rich cultural diversity of Bougainville and said that Papua New Guinea’s tourism industry is of great potential, and in high demand.

With Bougainville, an autonomous region, it looks good on the global market.

The trip, organised by Stanford University in California, aimed to promote and market tourism in Bougainville and Papua New Guinea on the world map.

In the meantime, while the potential is high, the Bougainville Tourism Office appealed to the Autonomous Bougainville Government to invest more, and support to develop the tourism industry.
