Earlier this year, Samoan Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi, had announced its plans to increase Samoa’s electricity production by the year 2017, to a 100 percent, from its current production of 35 percent.
The Prime Minister has now signed a financial agreement of $US663,000 to lay the ground work for its proposed biomass electricity production facility.
The project will establish the biomass supply chain and production that will lead to create an avenue in which to attract external investments to construct the country’s first gas plant.
Acting CEO of the Energy Division in the Ministry of Finance, Sione Foliaji, says energy sources such as solar will play a big role in helping to meet the target of producing a 100 percent, however, solar energy depends on the sun, and this can cause instability issues If used as high percentages of energy mix.
The proposed gasification plan will boost the country’s current production and balance the solar infrastructures installed.
