Withthe construction phase ofthe LNG project winding down, many qualiflied engineers will be out of work. And to attractthem tothe Works Department, Works Minister Francis Awesa will soon introduce various incentives.
One incentive is to build rental-free houses for engineers.
The department has a large portion of unused land at its headquarters at 4mile and wants to build at least thirty houses for Works Engineers.
Apart from thatoMinister Awesa says he is also preparing a submission for cabinet to increase salaries of engineers.
This will see all works engineers’ salaries brought to par with those inthe private sector.
Mr Awesa says many engineers left for good paying jobs inthe private sector, especiallythe LNG project during its initial construction period.
Withtheir indication to come back tothe departmentoMinister Awesa wants to offerthem and ther engineer’s good working conditions sothey servethe country and its people.
With one of government’s agendas to rebuild infrastructure inthe country,these people arethe very ones who will drive this agenda.
Mr Awesa said many roads and infrastructure projects aroundthe country have been done to low standards while some left unfinished because of a lack of supervision from government engineers.
He saidthe government’should learn from this and lend its support to introduce incentives to retain its engineers.
While on this, Minister Awesa said most incomplete road works aroundthe country will be scrutinized.
The first will bethe 21 kilometre road sealing project from Walum junction in his electorate to Wara Angula. Task Force Sweep team has been directed to investigate this K45 million project.
It has takenthe contractor five years andthe road still incomplete.
