Kumalu-2 villagers call for relocation

Kumalu-2 villagers in Belolo have called ontheir member of parliament to alleviatethe ongoing flood problems caused bythe Kumalu River.

They pleaded withtheir MP Sam Besil when he visited recently, to havethem relocated.

The recent heavy rains have posed many problems for the villagers. The flooding ofthe Kumalu River continues to wash away homes and food gardens.

When Mr Besil visitedthe community early this month,the villagers requestedthey be relocated. The member advisedthem to discussthe relocation idea with neighbouring Gamox and Kumubapa tribes first.

Once a decision is made, he saidthe district administration is only ready to assistthem by meeting any financial requirement to purchase land for the resettlement.

Meantime, Mr Besil offered to immediately relocatethe Kumalu-2 Elementary School, which was also affected bythe floods.

A bulldozer and excavator will be made available to clear land on higher grounds once an area is identiflied.

Duringthe same visitoMr Besil visitedthe Mumeng and Beang LLGs to distribute relief supportoafter homes and food gardens were washed away bythe floods. Families were given building materials and food supplies.
