PNGDF and US army Experts end Training

A paramount security training program was completed yesterday at Murray Barracks between PNG Defence Force and a team of U.S Air Force experts.

The Pacific Defender Outreach Program is designed to strengthen the capability of PNG’s military and civil police in preparation to host major events such as the 2015 Pacific Games and the 2018 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

The program included tabletop exercises and scenario discussions on a variety of topics including crowd control, confrontation management, and threat responses.

U.S. Ambassador Walter North and PNGDF Commander Gilbert Toropo were present during the closing of the training.

Ambassador North told the participants the engagement is an opportunity to deepen defense cooperation following the April visit of US Pacific Commander Admiral Locklear.

The training provides a forum to exchange views among security forces, leaders, information and understanding of security operations and develop interpersonal relationships for regional security.

This is the first time Papua New Guinea is hosting the U.S. Air Force team.
