Seven people have sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical attention at the Goroka Provincial Hospital following a Local Level Government Election related fight in Goroka township.
Violence broke out in Goroka township on Tuesday following differences among supporters of two contesting candidates.
As a result of the fight, seven men were confirmed by the Goroka Provincial Hospital Emergency Ward Acting Manager Dr. Shirley ToMangana to have received treatment at the Goroka Hospital.
It is confirmed that all those who sustained serious injuries were males between the ages of 20 to 50. However, no deaths have been reported.
Among those injured four have sustained serious head injuries and were under the influence of alcohol while the other four injuries included a patient with a fractured right leg.
Dr. ToMangana said the Goroka Hospital Emergency ward was on full alert and has managed to work on all casualties brought to the hospital.
The fight was later brought under control with the help of the Goroka Task Force Response Unit.
Eastern Highlands Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent John Kale says suspects involved in instigating the fight have been identified and the arrests will be made soon.
PPC Kale addressed both factions and talks were made with leaders from both sides to refrain their supporters from instigating any violence.
PPC Kale has also warned opportunists in Goroka who are taking advantage of the instability to harass the public to refrain from it.
