The Executive Management and Board of the Kokoda Track Special Purpose Authority (KTA) have paid tribute to Papua New Guinea’s fallen heroes, describing Remembrance Day as a time to honour the courage, sacrifice and unity of those who gave their lives during World War II.
Observed annually on July 23rd, Remembrance Day commemorates the service and sacrifice of Papua New Guineans who fought alongside Australian and Allied forces during the 1942 Kokoda Campaign and other battles across the country.
Thousands of Papua New Guineans, including the renowned Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and members of the Papua New Guinea Infantry Battalion, played a vital role as carriers, guides and soldiers, helping Allied forces during some of the fiercest fighting of the war.
KTA Chief Executive Officer Julius Wargirai, said the day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who laid down their lives so future generations could live in freedom.
“Remembrance Day is an opportunity to honour those who gave their lives so our country can enjoy freedom and stand proudly as a nation,” Wargirai said.
“The impact of the war was felt across Papua New Guinea, with many of our people serving as carriers and members of the armed forces alongside Australian and Allied soldiers in the fight against the Japanese.
“We remember their tireless service, bravery and unity. They stood on the front lines to defend their homeland, and many paid the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
Wargirai said the Kokoda Campaign remains one of the defining moments in Papua New Guinea’s history, highlighting the resilience, courage and selfless service of its people.
He urged all Papua New Guineans to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation’s war heroes and to continue preserving the legacy of unity, peace and patriotism that they left behind.
