Science and Technology Students Shine in Busu Secondary School’s First Exhibition Day

By Julie Badui-Owa – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Grade 11 Science and Technology students of Busu Secondary School, exhibited simple but ingenious devices, that can be useful in a typical PNG community. The models were displayed at their school Exhibition Day yesterday (July 5).

School Principal George Noble, told EMTV in Lae, that the idea was to help solve some of the social issues affecting the communities.

A Chemistry student Aaron Tarubi exhibited a low-cost bathroom tile made from recyclable plastics and sand. He explained that he collected plastic materials he felt was polluting the environment, and melted them in a tile mould. The melted plastic acted as an adhesive, to hold together a handful of sand, that was later thrown in. The mixture was left to cool until it hardened into a tile. He said it can be used for flooring.

Across the room a Physics student Leso Kargo, displayed a model of an ingenious mechanical coconut husker. He says people can save time and energy when husking coconuts with this device; an idea that students and their School Principal, Mr. Noble initiated.

Another two science students in grade 9 exhibited a simple yet impressive homemade water heater. They admitted it was risky to use at this stage, but it can definitely boil water for a cup of tea. One of the students, Musi Laupan, says they will continue refining the model, to make it safer to use.

Over in the social science corner, Jack Hombi, a legal studies student, proved quite the wiz when it came to legal procedures. He was seen highlighting all the legal procedures required when taking someone to court.

This is the first time Busu Secondary School organized an exhibition, that allowed the students to showcase what they were taught in the classroom, to the public.

Funds collected from the exhibition day will help build a 4 in 1 teacher’s house.
