Simbu Tribe Still Waiting for Payments from Government over Police, CS abuse

One tribe in the Kerowagi District of Simbu province says it is still waiting for over K1 million in cash.

A payment its lawyer was supposed to have given to the tribe.

The money was a result of a National Court Order issued by Justice Ambeng Kandakasi in 2015.

The order directs the Bank of Papua New Guinea to pay the tribesmen, over K1 million for damages and abuse of constitutional rights by police and correctional officers in 2000.

The tribe’s spokesperson, Kaigo Makenem, said BPNG had raised two separate cheques, totaling to K1.8 million, the money was deposited into Kuman Lawyer’s Trust Account, but the money was never paid to the locals.

The law firm has been contacted, and is yet to provide a response.
