United Church Women’s Convention

Over 2,000 women from the United Church across the country are expected to participate in their 7th Regional Convention to be held in Kerema, Gulf province.

Hela United Church Regional Women’s Fellowship team was the first to arrive in Port Moresby before travelling to Kerema.

Many of these women are mother, representing 12 circuits of the United Church in Hela Province, and will be participating in the convention.

Treasurer Hela Regional Women’s Fellowship, Miriam Luguni, says this will be the 3rd year of their participation after Hela became a province. This includes the church’s Pogera circuit in Enga Province.

A total of K130,000 has been raised from the registration fees, which will go towards their accommodation, logistics and meals.

This year’s convention has seen an increase of 1,000 participants, compared to previous conventions.

Luguni said in year 2000, the previous attendance was 50 women at the Hula Convention, and 70 from the Porebada convention in Central Province. These are part of the 11 regional women representatives from all the United Church Circuits across the country.

National President, Marama Kisa Gabutu, says a total of over 1,000 participants from other provincial circuits have yet to arrive in Port Moresby.

The purpose of this convention is to bring women for spiritual enrichment and also train special skills like sewing, cooking and literacy among others.

They will be leaving on Sunday to Miaru village in Kerema for this week long convention.
