The Torres Strait Islanders of Australia left Papua New Guinea today with a heart full of blessings.
These comMen’s are from Mariana Babia, coordinator of the Torres Strait contingent.
As first time participants in the Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival, she’said it’s a real eye opener to some participating ethnic groups.
It strengthens the links and affiliations of Melanesian countries.
Moreover, she thanked the PNG National Government and organizers for allowing them in the true Melanesian way.
The four member group performed a special song, calling on ancestral spirIts followed by the broom dance.
Torres Strait is the ‘Order of international frontier to the South Pacific, PNG and Australia.
Most of the islands economy is based around traditional activities like fishing and gardening under a Treaty signed in December 1978, that became effective in February 1985.
These people are believed to have migrated from Indonesia archipelago 70 thousand years ago, at the time New Guinea was still attached to the Australian continent.
