PORT MORESBY, July 5 – Thelma Mea Toua (PNG) won Papua New Guinea’s first gold medals of the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games, taking all three of the women’s 48kg weightlifting titles at the PNG Power Dome on Sunday.
Toua who is the younger sister of PNG weightlifting star Dika Toua proved too strong for Mary Barter (AUS) and Seruwaia Malani (FIJ) in the snatch, clean and jerk and total events.
Barter and Malani won silver and bronze respectively in all three events and Barter’s silver medal is the first for Australia in Pacific Games history.
Toua attempted to break the Oceania record in the snatch, but her attempt was ruled ineligible by the judges.
The medals were presented by HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York (GBR) followed by a bilum presentation by the Minister for Sport, Justin Tkatchenko (PNG).
