Solwara 1 Project Begins Early 2018

By Lorraine Gabina – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Solwara 1 project developer, Nautilus Minerals, has announced the project is to begin in early 2018.

According to Nautilus Minerals, Country Manager for PNG, Mel Togolo, the project has strong government and local support.

Togolo said, when the mining starts extraction, there would not be any tailing as the ore is to be exported to China to be processed.

Meanwhile, Mining Minister, Byron Chan told the PNG Mining and Petroleum conference in Port Moresby that the changes introduced into the policies and the law had been endorsed by cabinet in 2013 and introduced into the revised Mining Act 2015; Chan said it is nothing new as it is consistent with mining standard.

These changes were effected after numerous consultations with provincial governments, landowners, civil society, non-government organisations and state agencies over a four-year period and a specific consultation with the industry through the PNG Chamber of Chamber of Mines.
