This week’s episode of Resource PNG, we visit Lihir Island in the New Ireland province.
The gold mining island has been a hive of conflict between the landowners and the mining developers at certain times.
Landowners say they have not been part of most of the developments that are happening on their customary land.
Now with the re-establishment of Incorporated Land Groups (ILG) by the government, the landowners hope to be part of these developments.
The Masi Incorporated land group of Lihir is one of the first tribal clan on the island to launch its ILG making them a legal entity to dictate how they want their land to be developed by developers.
