School children in the Nation’s Capital have begun observing the National Book Week, which began on Monday 3rd August 2015.
Teachers have been hard at work, organising activities to ensure that students grasp the importance of reading, and its lifetime benefits.
National Book Week is one of the busiest weeks in the year for the national library with thousands of school children passing through it’s doors on school excursions.
The usually quiet library was kept busy as hundreds of students, from different schools, filed in to participate in various book week activities.
One such school was the St John’s Primary School. The school which is located in the Port Moresby suburb of Tokarara, is a model classroom library school. Teacher, Linda Nungwehim, said reading is essential for children in learning and for human development.
Also at the national library today were the younger students from the Twinky Winky International School who engaged in a lively reading session.
This year’s Book Week is themed “Reading Is Power”, with posters carrying on the theme from the Pacific Games.
