Komo-Magarima MP, Francis Potape, is taking a bold stand to legislate a law to stop compensation payments.
Potape made thid statement following the El Nino effects experienced in the country.
The local MP says compensation money can be used for other important issues people face.
Potape says if compensation is stopped people will have enough to save and spend for a good cause. The local MP sees this as an economic burden and is making steps to stop this ongoing practice.
“We must outlaw compensation,” Potape said.
The recent dry spell in the country is a lesson learnt exercise, and Potape is optimistic this law will help minimise this habit.
Another issue of concern is the low financial literacy rate in the province.
Potape says people must adapt the savings culture that must be made possible by commercial banks operating in the country.
Meanwhile, rice distribution for the Komo-Magarima District is continuing with over 8,000 bags bought under joint funding by the national government and Hela Province. Each ward council will receive 300 bags.
