Moukele Junior Netball Association On The Rise

By Dinnierose Raiko – EMTV Sports, Port Moresby

Moukele Junior Netball Association from Fisherman’s Island along the coast of Port Moresby started in 2010, but ceased competition in 2012 due to lack of facilities on the Island.

The association revived the code earlier this year, and found a spot in the Junior Netball Championship.

Moukele has a total of 14 teams participating; four Under 10, four Under 15 and six in the Under 21 category.

With the aim of teaching netball and developing skills among the young girls on Fisherman’s Island, it was a competition worth reviving as one of its teams is now competing at the national level.

Fisherman’s Island has previously produced a PNG national netball representative, Olema Kila, in the early 90s and the island association hopes to produce more talent to represent the country.

They are now calling on business houses to assist with funds to build standard netball facilities on the island.

Meanwhile, the Moukele team participating at the Junior Netball Championship, which kicked of yesterday at the Rita Flynn Courts in Moresby, hopes to make it to the PNG Games selection trials.
