Mother of Rape Survivor Appeals for Public Support

by Rachel Shisei – EM TV News, Madang

The mother of a 5 year old girl who was raped on the weekend in Madang Province is appealing to the public to hand in a suspect still on the run.

The child was abducted from her home in the Balasiko area by two men while she was walking to use the toilet around one metre from her house.

She was later found at the Sisiak area by a woman from Goroka and was taken to the Modilon General Hospital, the girl was then identified by members of the public.

The mother and child are still at the hospital with the girl said to be recovering well.

One of the suspects is reportedly in police custody, while the other still remains at large.

The survivor’s mother is also urging other parents to never lose sight of their daughters, regardless of age.

According to a 2008 report by UNICEF, Papua New Guinea suffers from one of the world’s highest rates of sexual violence, with young people particularly at risk.

The report states “nearly half of reported rape victims are under age 15, and 13 per cent are younger than age 7”.
