Mining areas to undergo health assessments

The Law Reform Commission says Health and safety of people of mine areas are fundamental andthere must be laws to ensure those.

This is point 6 ofthe terms of referencethe Commission is looking into.

The Terms of Reference focuses on health for people in areas operated by mining companies.

Dr Eric Kwa said assessments will be conducted to find outthe types of diseases which form a data base for health programs to be implemented.

Panguna Mine on Bougainville will bethe first case study. There had been reports of deformities of children at birth.

The commission will liaise withthe Autonomous Bougainville Government to carry outthe study.

Representttingthe Environment and Conservation Department atthe conference was Goro Arigae who spoke on ecofriendy and sustainability.  

Mr Arigae said development is vital but must be managed for the peoples benefit.
