Milne Bay: Housing for Legal Officers to Improve Services

by Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

People of the Milne Bay province will now have access to proper legal services, following the opening of two staff houses for the office of the public prosecutor, and the public solicitor.

Refurbishment of the public prosecutor’s office was completed through the PNG-Australia Law and Justice Partnership.

These developments will now stop the fly-in-fly-out basis of legal officers from Port Moresby to Milne Bay. The office of the public prosecutor commended the Australian government and Milne Bay provincial government for their joint funding of K720,000.

“This will significantly improve access to, as well as delivery of, legal services for the people of Milne Bay,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor, Timothy Ai.

“The local and permanent establishment of these legal services in Alotau will allow them to develop greater collaboration between locally-based justice agencies and national justice agencies to together ensure the delivery of impartial and independent justice.”

The buildings were opened this week.
