The PNG Rugby Community and New Zealand High Commissioner, Tony Fautua, held a meet and greet last night in Port Moresby to commemorate and honour the legacy left behind, by World Rugby icon, Jonah Lomu.
The ceremony was small but significant, as it highlighted the impact Lomu had in changing the game of rugby.
While his passing comes as a great loss to the entire world rugby fraternity, it has also set precedence for World Rugby to grow the code in the Pacific.
Former PNG Rugby representative, and someone who is held in high regard in the rugby community, Paul Joseph, is one of the very few in PNG Rugby, who has had the opportunity to share the same field, with Jonah Lomu. Something he says, he will cherish forever.
Papua New Guinean brothers, Frank, Will and Nigel Genia who have played for Papua New Guinea and Australia are testaments of Lomu’s influence. Although unfortunate, Lomu’s passing has drawn strength from the entire Pacific Island rugby community.
He has left behind a lasting legacy, that will remain in the game forever, and has paved the way forward for many Papua New Guineans alike, to follow.
