Lae Police have arrested and charged a suspect for the murder of a 20-year-old woman whose body was found just outside of the Igam PNG Defence Force Barracks, two weeks ago.
Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent, Anthony Wagambie, says the suspect is a son of a serving member of the PNG Defence Force.
The suspect was the young woman’s boyfriend.
Lae Police have carried out a thorough investigation and have managed to identify the suspect.
Police say circumstantial evidence points to the boyfriend of the deceased.
At this time investigators are not ruling out the possibility of the involvement of other accomplices.
Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent, Anthony Wagambie, said the deceased was buried in a shallow grave within the training area of the barracks.
Wagambie said evidences found on her body indicate that she may have been buried at least three days before she was discovered.
According to relatives’ statement presented to police, she was about seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
The Metropolitan Commander acknowledged the woman’s relatives for their patience during the investigation, and for not taking the law into their own hands.
The suspect is in police custody and will be taken to Buimo Jail after he appears for mention.
