Kutubu and Nipa LLG’s in the Southern Highlands Province are poised to be the role model LLG’s under a five year development plan.
At the invitation of both Southern Highlands Governor, William Powi and Nipa – Kutubu MP, Jeffrey Komal, the five year development plan was compiled by Oil Search Limited, the major developer of the Kutubu Oil Project and a shareholder in the PNG LNG Gas project.
The projects identified in the plan will be implemented using the managed Tax Credit or other funds aligned with government plans and activities in the District.
Stakeholders present to witness the occasion included Oil Search Limited Executives led by Executive General Manager for External and Government Affairs and Sustainability, Gerea Aopi , Member for Nipa – Kutubu Jeffrey Komal and Southern Highlands Governor William Powi.
Oil Search Limited completed 5 year development plan for Nipa – Kutubu District in Southern Highlands Province and presented it the leaders of the Province.
As the major developer in the District operating for almost 23 years, the Provincial Leaders tasked Oil Search Limited to finalise the plan using its existing database. Oil Search Executive General Manager for External and Government Affairs and Sustainability, Gerea Aopi, emphasised that having good plans in place enables them to implement projects relevant on the ground.
The local MP, Jeffrey Komal in response commended Oil Search for its continuous support in developing his District. He said there have been many setbacks in developing the District but hopes the 5 year development plan will materialise to improve the District.
The Nipa – Kutubu Five Year Development plan contains developmental plans that are aligned with the strategies from the Southern Highlands Provincial Master Plan 2013 – 2017. Provincial Governor William Powi said the Master plan focuses on Restoration and Rehabilitation and the District plan compliments this. He also priorities Law and Order and road upgrade and maintenance.
It’s anticipated that together with Oil Search Limited, Nipa – Kutubu District and the Southern Highlands Provincial Government, such plans will be utilised to develop the District and Province in the future when windfall income accrues to landowners, LLG’s and Provincial Governments as a result of the PNG LNG Project when it comes on stream later this year.
