The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Papua New Guineashows thatthe Highlands Region hasthe highest.
This was revealed by National Aids Council Secretariat Chairman Dr Benare Ben.
Dr Ben said two ther hotspots are Morobe andthe National Capital District.
The 2011 HIV prevalence rate shows that highlands region leads with zero point nine one with all its provinces inthe top seven.
Dr Ben says HIV/AIDS transmission continues to be fuelled by unsafe behaviours inthe context of complex, social, cultural, economic and political factors.
“They are leading in term of new HIV infections inthe country. My community will spend extra time and resources to addressthese provinces,” says Dr Ben.
Meanwhile, Dr Ben expressed disappointment over a media report on Enga recording seven thousand HIV/AIDS cases. He clariflied 700 cases were recorded last year till April this year.
“The country is an average of three thousand new cases a year so how can one province have seven thousand new cases,” says Dr Ben.
Dr Ben says statistics will only be approverd and released bythe secretariat.
