The Southern Highlands province has many road networks.
It is surrounded by rugged mountains, which at times, makes travelling difficult.
In bad weather, roads are ruined and travellers are affected. Two weeks ago, continuous rain in the highlands caused major flooding, landslides and damaged roads in parts of Hela and the Southern Highlands province. Last month, landslides in Kainantu in Eastern Highlands province blocked areas of the highway.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said upgrading of the roads will commence once the proper groundwork is done in the affected areas.
“We will complete these roads in the next two and a half years, “Mr O’Neill said.
The Prime Minister also announced major road projects in the province, as well as the construction of the Southern Highlands Highway, which will connect the province to Kikori in Gulf province.
Mr O’Neill said this during his visit to Kagua-Erave last week.
