Four men, who have been charged for two counts of attempted murder and wilful damage, appeared for mention at the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
The four were allegedly involved in destroying two government vehicles before attacking the neighbour of the complainant, Steven Gibson, the former Finance Secretary.
The four, all from Enga, are Tom Naika, Ricky Lita, Newman Tubim and Gibson Tom.
They live two houses away from the complainant at the Walalawa Finance Compound at Gerehu Stage One.
It is alleged that the four were under the influence of alcohol and went to Gibson’s house on the night of October 16, last year.
The Committal Court heard that the four broke down the main gate of Gibson’s house and smashed the windscreen of four vehicles, before destroying other private property.
According to police investigations, the incident resulted from continuous drinking and disorderly behaviour by the four.
The cost of damage is valued at over K80,000.
The four have justified their actions in their statements as an act of frustration over the delay of police investigations into the death of their relative two months prior to the attack.
Following further assessment of the damages, additional charges were laid against them.
These include four counts of break and enter into a dwelling house and committing crime under section 395 of the Criminal Code Act.
All four are now detained at the Boroko Police Station holding cells awaiting their next hearing.
