First Women’s Bank In PNG

Women in the country have a reason to celebrate after years of waiting with the official opening of the first women’s micro bank in the country.

The fourth bank in the world and the first for women in the Pacific region, this is a historic event for women in Papua New Guinea.

 

This is the day where women in the country have been waiting for and gathered to witness the official opening of their bank.

 

Keynote speaker for the day, Richard Maru, minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, encouraged women to take ownership of the bank and make it a success for women in the country, especially those in the rural areas.

 

He also added that the Government will continue to support Women in Business and is fully committed to providing K30 million to women owned businesses.

 

Women’s microbank CEO, Thushari Hewapathirana, also added that the bank is

looking at forming partnership with agencies to provide more services for women in the country.

 

Governor for NCD, Powes Parkop, also showed his commitment to the bank and women by presenting a cheque of K150 thousand, the first payment of his commitment towards the bank.
