Female Inmate Obtains Order for Medical Help

A female inmate has successfully obtained a court order allowing her to seek medical help from the Port Moresby General Hospital.

The order came after applicant Madline Yari, a mother of two and a TB patient, told the court correctional officers and the office of the Public Solicitor denied her medical treatment and legal assistance.

Yari is serving 17 years in prison for the death of her boyfriend. She was represented herself in court this afternoon.

Presiding Judge Justice David Cannings made the order on the grounds that the allegations Yari raised in court were serious.

The order states that Yari will have access to 15 minutes of telephone calls to her lawyer or a medical doctor each week, and warders have to ensure the orders are complied with.

A copy of the court order will be served to the Bomana Jail Commander, Kiddy Keko. Justice Cannings also told Yari to consider getting a lawyer to represent her in another proceeding involving her that is currently before the Supreme Court.
