Employees call on Lae City Council to clarify Entitlements

By Julie Badui Owa – EMTV News, Lae

Employees of Lae City Council are claiming that there are discrepancies in their payment towards their superannuation.

Their queries dated back from 2016 to 2011. According to their pay slips, Lae City Council had made deductions.

When they went to get their statements from the savings and loan society, they were told that there was nothing paid to their account by the employer.

The employees have been working with Lae City Council for more than 20 years.

EMTV was told that the deductions made from their salary from 2011 to 2016 were not paid by their employer.

After following up with their savings and loan society, they were told that Lae City Council had not paid in the money that was deducted from their salary. This includes the employer’s contribution of 8.4 percent and employees contribution of 6 percent.

This issue of concern has been there since 2011 to 2016. The employees said they have raised this with the previous management but nothing was done.

These employees work within the city boundary. Their areas of responsibilities include garbage collection, road maintenance and grass cutting.

Some of them have been doing this for more than 30 years. For others, they are still on casual pay though they have been employed with Lae City Council for more than 7 years.

The employees said it was difficult for them to raise their concerns publicly as it was alleged that the management would terminate them.

They are now calling on Lae City Council to clarify to them about their savings and entitlements.
