Elementary Teacher Training Reform Report

A research report on the experiences of Pre-Service Elementary Teacher Training was launched in Port Moresby yesterday.

The report was part of the Elementary Teacher Training Reform (ETTR) project of Teacher Education Division and Papua New Guinea Education Institute.

More than Five Hundred elementary teachers and trainers nationwide participated in that research, carried out by Volunteer Services International, an NGO in Madang, last October.

Findings from this research have highlighted several reasons why elementary education was ineffective.

Resultsshows that elementary teachers trained in PNG Education Institute were more competent than those trained in home provinces.

It was revealed that one in four elementary teachers, have never been to a Curriculum Cluster workshop, and a similar proportion have never had supervised teaching.

The Report also shows that Teacher Trainers were ill equipped that resulted in a decline in their performances.
