Despite national Education being a priority for successive governments, its delivery still faces struggles.

In the recent National Education Conference in Goroka, more was discussed in ironing out issues tackling education in Papua New Guinea.

Chair of the conference, Dr Kelep Malpo said teachers must be at the forefront of changes.

Teaching education has seen the contrast between its quality versus the quantity. The sector has come a long way, but is now faced with many changes.

“Teachers welfare, teacher’s recruitment, and professionalism must be drivers for the sector to adapt to changes and move forward,” Dr Malpo said.

It is evident that PNG’s landscape and geography hampers the delivery of education to rural places, successive governments have tried addressing this, but constraints remain. Recent reforms in both curriculum and policy are making progress but needs proper guidance and analysis.

Acting Education Secretary, Dr Uke Kombra, said the department is progressing but many challenges remain for all stakeholders to dicsuss and find a best solution to produce the best education for the country.

“Such forum sees all stakeholders to create a bright future for our education system,” Dr Kombra said.

PNG has inplace a desirable system, from the outset, not only the Government but churches and the private sector are aiding with the growth of schools in the country.

A paper will be presented to the National Education Department for consideration based on the discussions and outcomes of the three day conference.
