Businesses Close after Continuous Blackouts

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

Business houses were also affected by the shortage of fuel supply in Port Moresby.

At 2pm, the Westpac bank in Waigani closed its doors after a having to deal with continuous power outages today.

The bank was amongst a number of business houses that closed down early.

A number of customers and business houses who turned up to do banking transactions were asked to leave the building.

The continued powered outages affected almost all of the company’s operations and employees were also sent home.

The bank has been experiencing load shedding since yesterday and employees say the backup generator was not able to start.

“We could not start the generator, it was out since yesterday morning,” an employee said.

But PNG Power says such power outages are expected to continue and more business houses will be closing early because of the shortage of fuel in Port Moresby.

More load shedding is expected to continue.
