Another Police Confrontation in Port Moresby

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A confrontation between the police and the Waigani Market vendors in Port Moresby, last night and this morning, has ended with many people injured.

Currently, the market is closed, with hundreds of vegetable bags inside.

Displaced vendors told EMTV News that the confrontation is in relation to the New Year rape of four females, at Morata One.

The vendors, who are mostly Engans, told EMTV News that the police wanted them to bring the culprits who are also from Enga, and who were involved in the Morata pack rape of four females during the New Year.

However, the vendors say that they are from different parts of Enga and they do not know the culprits.

Waigaini PSC, Inspector Yosman, said that the Enga community in Morata brought a list of some suspects and presented to him.

A father of two boys, involved in a fight before the rape took place, also brought his sons forward.

So far seven suspects have been arrested and detained.

Meanwhile, the victims of the rape said responsible authorities and the Government have not been vocal about their situation. They questioned why the authorities are vocal about a similar incident which has occurred to foreigners.
